what the cluck are you talking about?!'
So… what exactly is Chicken Free Chicken? Well, it’s basically made from 43% pea protein and the rest is a mixture of pea fibre, pumpkin powder, yeast and maize. Pretty simple huh!? There is no gluten, soy or preservatives if you are keen on that. It is prepared by Sunfed Foods and is made right here in New Zealand! Sunfed’s products are typically stocked in Countdown and New World Supermarkets.
As you know, we are not vegans and like a bit of the meat! But we thought we’d give this new product a carnivore's review before you go out and spend your hard earned dollars!
How much does it cost?!
Well, it’s not that much more expensive than the real deal at $12.99 for 300grams. It is marginally more expensive than the normal chicken, but it will feed three people and is stored frozen which is convenient.
Is it easy to cook?!
It’s super easy to cook and there’s no risk of getting ‘the (Insert Poo Emoji here)’s if it’s under cooked. It takes a couple of minutes to cook from frozen when pan fried, We do not recommend cooking it much longer than 4 mins, as it will dry out fast!
How does it taste?!
Well, It actually tastes bloody good! It’s like a cross between pork and chicken and it tastes nothing like mushed peas. it isn’t strong in flavour but does have that meaty taste. The craziest thing is that the texture feels just like meat.
Anything to add?!
Like any lean meat, it doesn’t have strong flavours so we’d highly recommend seasoning the meat just as you would with any other lean meat!
